“Why do I get a bad feeling when an April representative makes a face like this...?”
1. Drama – “Unmatched Hearts"
Hikaru: Phew, we sure ran our hearts out! P.E. is really exhausting, don’t you think?
Aya: Yeah... It is.
Hikaru: Huh? Aya... You don’t sound very happy.
Aya: No, that’s not really... it, but...
Hikaru: Could it have something to do with the practice exam a while back? Are you concerned about the results you got?
Aya: Well, um... Yeah.
[Chisa and Wakaba run over, panting.]
Chisa: *panting* There, over there! We found the targets!! ✨
Wakaba: *whispering* Hey, stop that! Keep that big mouth shut!! They’ll notice us, you know!?
Chisa: Ah, yeah— *sweatdrop* Ahahaha... Sorry, sorry...
Wakaba: *whispering* We’re gonna hide!
Chisa: *whispering* Roger~
Wakaba: Let’s see here~? Those two are our targets this time.
Hikaru-san and Aya-san. They’re high school third years right now. They’re childhood friends who’ve gone to the same elementary, junior high, and high schools, and absolute best friends, apparently.
Chisa: Hmm. Six years of elementary, three years of junior high, and three years of high school. Oh, wow, they’ve been together for more than ten whole years!
Best friends who are as close as me and Waka-chan! ♡
If anything, we’re even more besties, aren’t we~? Ehe ♡
Wakaba: Yeah, sure, all right... No need to get all competitive with them for no reason.
Chisa: Ahahaha~ So lemme see, let’s see here.
I see. They’ve made a habit of chatting at this park on their way home from school.
Wakaba: Mhmm. Going off of the reactions of their spiritual energy, it’s been confirmed that they’re struggling with some sort of problem, though...
We don’t know what exactly that is. We have to start with observation, isn’t that right?
Chisa: GOT IIIT~!! ✨
Wakaba: *whispering* STUPID!! Keep quiet!!
Chisa: Oop! *whispering* ...Got it~!
-
Aya: You sure have it easy, Hikaru. Your future course is all set.
Hikaru: Huh? A-ah... Yeah. It’s been my lifelong dream to become a game creator!
I’m so glad I found a vocational school I wanted to go to.
Aya: ...Your dream’s so distinct and concrete. I envy that.
Hikaru: What? But aren’t you working hard to get into your dream college, too?
Aya: ...I am, but i-it’s not like I’m reaching the target points to get in... At this rate, I don’t know if I’ll be able to get in...
Hikaru: Ah—......
Aya: Maybe I should’ve gone for a vocational school like you, Hikaru! If I did that, I wouldn’t have to study as much, haha.
Hikaru: That’s not the reason why I chose a vocational sch... ...Never mind.
Aya, your grades for the practice test a while ago were pretty bad, huh...?
Aya: I got a B grade...
[T/N: Japanese grading system for getting into college is broken down into A~E. A-ranked colleges are the easiest to get into, with over 80% accepting students, and down the ladder and so forth. The hardest is an E-grade college, which accepts fewer than 20% of applicants.
Aya getting B-grade for her practice exam means that she’d get into a college that accepts around 60% of applicants.]
Hikaru: Th-that’s just a thing that happens too, right? You’ll be fine! Totally fine!
I definitely, absolutely know you’ll be fine! You still have time, so let’s take it easy, okay?
Aya: It’s not... not fine. I won’t be fine at all.
Hikaru: What...?
Aya: D-do you even know how I feel...? I can’t say such lighthearted stuff! You don’t even know how others feel, so don’t just say whatever you want!!
Hikaru: I-I just wanted you to cheer up...
Aya: Ah...! I’m sorry. I know, but... hh... *sighs* I’m going home for today.
Hikaru: Uh... a-all right! See you...
[They walk away.]
Chisa, Wakaba: Oh... Ough...
Wakaba: *sucks in breath* They left each other with some nasty parting feelings...
Chisa: I get it now. Mending this strained relationship is our assignment for this on-the-job training, huh?
Wakaba: Now this is one uber-sensitive topic. Have you done this sorta training multiple times already?
Chisa: Of course I’ve done it lots of times before with my boss Sumire-san. But~ It’s my first time doing it alone~! And what about you, Wakaba?
Wakaba: Same here. It’s also my first time doing an exercise without Akira-san.
“It will strengthen your synergistic activities with Togawa, so try doing it by yourselves,” she said, and booted me right out.
Chisa: *chuckles* Booted you out? Akira-san’s got a strong sense of responsibility, so I bet she’d be watching you in the mission room right about now.
*waving* Yoo-hoo~! Are you doing well~!?
Wakaba: H-hey, stop that! Quit it! You’ll spook Akira-san!
And by the way, Chisa. From outside, you just look like some total freak who’s shouting stuff to yourself while looking at the sky.
Chisa: O-oh, yeah. Forgot that was a thing!
But basically, we can’t just keep being support for our Goddesses. Let’s aim to become independent and do our very besties~! ✨
Wakaba: Ooh, uh...! Sure!
... *sighs* What a relief that you’re the same as always. Honestly, I was a little worried, but I’m starting to think that we’ll be able to make it work somehow.
Chisa: Ahaha! It’s all right! We’ll be fine! Since it’s both our first times going at it alone... Yes! We have BEGINNER’S LUCK on our side! ☆
At least, I hope we do! I bet things will work themselves out one way or another~! *giggles*
Wakaba: *chuckling nervously* Though I’m not too keen on the idea of leaving things all up to chance...
So let’s not waste any time and think up ways to solve our targets’ problem.
Y’know, watching them made me feel frustrated.
Chisa: I know, right~? Like, both of them don’t have any ill intentions.
Wakaba: Yeah, definitely. And I bet they both understand that’s the case. But...
Chisa: It’s like one of those situations where your head understands what’s going on, but your heart can’t keep up.
Wakaba: When you’re faced with university entrance exams and don’t have any ease to spare, you naturally end up ticked off at every little thing.
It’s like I was looking at my past self.
Chisa: Aah, yeah... We sure had a time like that, didn’t we?
Wakaba: Mmhmm. It was around the time the graduation selection exam was right in front of us...
[Flashback.]
Chisa: Urrgh... My grades for the practice exam barely scraped by! As always...! It’s like I escaped the pit of failing by the skin of my teeth!
How’d it go for you, Wakaba?
Wakaba: Basically the same for me, too... *groans* It’ll be horrible if things keep up like this...
Chisa: Same here! Thank goodness...
Wakaba: No, do you even hear what you’re saying? There’s nothing to thank. There’s nothing good about it.
Chisa: Nahaha~! But being with you makes me feel at ease.
If you were super-duper capable, I’d go, “DON’T LEAVE ME BEHIND~!!”
Wakaba: Technically, I do understand where you’re coming from, but this isn’t the time for that~!? If we keep this up, both of us will end up failing!
Chisa: Urk... Well, I get that, but...
Wakaba: All right. Let’s study a little harder!
Chisa: Um... Uh, yeah...
... *sighs* ...
Wakaba: ? Chisa, what’s the matter?
Chisa: Um, hey... I’m considering maybe... not taking the selection exam.
Wakaba: Wh...
Chisa: No, I mean— Even if I were to take it, there’s always next year... you know?
Wakaba: Why so suddenly? We’ve worked so hard together until now.
Chisa: Because... don’t you see? I... worked hard enough this time around.
I worked hard. I did my best. I hung in there... yet...! I’m totally useless...!
My grades aren’t improving. I get the feeling that I’m not meant for this sorta thing.
Wakaba: Ah—
...Getting all weak-kneed at this point in time won’t do anything to change your situation.
Chisa: ...Sure.
Wakaba: More importantly, let’s study, all right!?
Chisa: ...Sure.
Wakaba: Chisa...
Chisa: I know. I get it, but it’s like I’m just so stressed that nothing’s sticking!
Wakaba: Even still, you gotta do it...! Let’s do it together!
I’m just as stressed as you are......!
[The present.]
Chisa: Aaahahaha~! That sure happened, didn’t it~! Like, how neither of us said our pieces with any bad intentions in mind!
Wakaba: Yeah. We were both filled with pent-up worries, so we didn’t have any leeway to think about the other’s feelings.
Chisa: For sure~
We had that prickly-tense atmosphere between us for a while after that... *chuckles*
Wakaba: *laughs* Uh huh, yeah. Since it was so rare for the two of us to act like that with each other, the people around us were concerned, too...
Especially Hina! We really flustered her back then...
Chisa: Yep. We screwed up real bad with that.
Wakaba: *sighs* ...But now that we’ve gotten through that phase, it’s more like something we can look back on and laugh about.
Chisa: Yeah... I hope the targets can laugh together like this sometime soon!
Wakaba: Yeah!
Chisa: Saving their friendship is what makes a Goddess! ✨
We’ve arrived at the prime time to rescue their friendship from a fatal crisis! It’s time for us, duo name Beginner’s Luck, to make its move!!
✨SPARKLE~~~✨
Wakaba: Judging by that duo name, we’ll break up once we’re no longer beginners...! *laughing wryly*
Well, then! The issue is, how do we mend this critical situation...?
Chisa: If that’s your question, then I’ve got the answers!
Actually~ I have an awesome plan in mind~
Wakaba: Wh—Really?
Chisa: Why, I thought! This! Would! Happen ☆ So I made a request of the Goddess Institute’s research team and have obtained a secret weapon!
*fanfare~*
Wakaba: Secret weapon...!?
...What is it?
Chisa: Hoo, hoo, hoo...! You better look forward to it~! ☆
Wakaba: *shudders* Urgh... Why do I get a bad feeling when an April representative makes a face like this...?
2. Drama – “Hearts Side-by-Side"
Hikaru: It’s been getting colder these days, huh?
Aya: Definitely.
Hikaru: Ah! I heard that a new crepe shop opened up in front of the station!
Aya: Huh!? I didn’t know about that!
Hikaru: Yeah, me neither! So next time, let’s... ...Ah.
Aya: What is it?
Hikaru: No, it’s just... You must be busy with cram school and practice exams, huh?
Aya: Uh—Oh... yeah, but...
Hikaru: Um. Let’s head home soon!
Chisa: Waka-chan, hurry up, hurry up! The targets are gonna leave~!!
Wakaba: Hold on, Chisa—*whispering* Don’t say stuff like “target” at the top of your lungs like that!!
Chisa: *whispering* Sorry, sorry! It looked like they were going to leave, so I couldn’t help it...!
Wakaba: More importantly... is it really okay to go with these clothes!?
Chisa: It’s fine! It’s definitely fine! Right now, we look like the textbook definition of high school girls from every which angle!
Wakaba: So this... is the power of your so-called secret weapon, eh...?
Chisa: Yep! It’s an order-made transformation stick which I requested the research team to build! The fruits of the Moon’s scientific advancements are right here in my hands!
There’s a time limit, but it can change your appearance to look like whatever you desire~!
Mmfufufu~! ❤✨
Wakaba: We’re not magical girls or anything...
Chisa: Ehehe! Isn’t it a perfect item for me? I always wanted to try being a transforming heroine~
Transforming with sparkles and glitter~✨
Solving the absolute crap outta trouble with my bare fists! *PUNCHING SFX*
And disappear as quickly as I appeared on the scene~ *wind blowing sfx*
A Goddess like that! Wouldn’t that be so totally coolsies~!?
Wakaba: Yeah, yeah. That’s cool. So totally coolsies.
*groans* Jeez, now this is why April representatives are a handful to deal with...
Chisa: Ehehehe~! Sheesh, quit heaping on the praise like that!
Wakaba: That was not a compliment!
...C’mon, quit loafing around on cloud nine and let’s hurry up and go. The time limit’s ten minutes, right?
Chisa: Yessiree. As we express our sincerest gratitude to the research team’s development skills...
Wakaba: Let’s start the mission!
Chisa: Roger~!
Togawa Chisa is heading on out~! ☆
Wakaba: Yuuki Wakaba, heading out!
[The two of them run out into the clearing.]
Wakaba: *panting* Chisa! Come on, wait a second. What’s wrong? You just got up and started running.
Chisa: Sorry. ...Ngh...
Wakaba: Chisa?
Chisa: I’m... considering not taking entrance exams.
Wakaba: Uh—But why?
We’ve worked so hard together until now.
Chisa: Because! My grades aren’t improving. It was impossible for me since the very start.
Wakaba: Chisa...! ...Getting all weak-kneed at this point in time won’t do anything to change your situation.
More importantly, let’s study, if only a little bit. All right?
Chisa: Mm...
Wakaba: Chisa...
Chisa: I know. I get it, but it’s like I’m just so stressed that nothing’s sticking!
Wakaba: Even still, you gotta do it...! Let’s do it together!
I’m just as stressed... as you are......!
Hikaru: H-hey... Aren’t the girls next to us...
Aya: Are they... having a fight?
Chisa: *whispering* ...Doesn’t this sort of take you back? This is where our conversation cut off, and it made our relationship all sorts of strained.
Wakaba: *whispering* Yeah. But now, we know a completely different destination we could’ve steered it to.
Chisa: ...I’m sorry, Wakaba! You’re also stressed, but... ...I know you’ll be okay. Because it’s you we’re talking about.
Your goals are always so clear-cut and distinct, and you head to them directly.
Wakaba: Hey, you know... I’m just as worried as you are.
Chisa: Huh?
Wakaba: Nothing’s a given when it comes to entrance exams. There are people who get so emotional because their results improve leaps and bounds at the start.
And on the other hand, there are also people who can never catch up, no matter how much they study.
I’m... constantly stressed about it.
Chisa: Wakaba...
Wakaba: ......
Chisa: Hh... Y-you’re... right. I’m sorry. I kept thinking that I was the only one worried about it all. Even though I know you’re just about as anxious as I am.
I didn’t even consider your feelings, so... I’m sorry!
Wakaba: No, it’s fine. But are you... going to really not take the entrance exams?
Chisa: ...Hmph~. Wakaba? You already know what I’m gonna say, but you still asked me?
Wakaba: Heh! ...Ehe. I know, deep inside, you don’t wanna toss everything all away.
Chisa: Yep. You got it. I just got cold feet for a second there.
There’s no way I could give up now that I’ve come this far!
Wakaba: I know, right?
*sighs* Whew, that’s a relief!
Chisa: Wakaba?
Wakaba: I didn’t think about how you felt. I also tried hitting back with what I considered to be a logical argument.
Chisa: I should be the one apologizing here! We were both panicking, and neither of us had the leeway to worry about the other person.
Wakaba: For sure. Still, I guess we can say that we’ve made up with each other.
Chisa: Yeah! I don’t like having our arguments be all up in the air, either.
Ah—But...
Wakaba: Chisa?
Chisa: Our goal’s still far off into the future, so there might be... more times when I say cowardly stuff again.
Wakaba: It’s okay to be a coward. It’s not like you can help it.
Anxiety and fear aren’t things you can do anything about. I don’t think they’ll ever disappear until the end. Plus, I don’t know how to solve those things, either.
Chisa: *giggles* Heh, true~...!
Wakaba: But well, hey! When that happens, let’s talk about our feelings together!
Even if we can’t solve our problems, it might lift a bit of weight off our shoulders? That’s what’s most important!
Chisa: Ah...! For sure! It’s important, for sure!
...Hey, you know? I know how hard you’re working, like it’s the back of my hand!
Wakaba: Wha—Huh—Wh-what are you going off about? That’s coming out of nowhere...
Chisa: Well, uh, I just thought that I had to tell you! Because we’re absolute best friends!
Aah~! Waka-chan, are you getting embarrassed~!?
Wakaba: I-I’m not embarrassed! Sheesh!
And hey, Chisa! You’re making sure to wake up early these days to finish your problem sets, huh?
Chisa: Oop! Cat’s outta the bag, huh~?
Whoo-hoo! Heap on the praise, girl! Gimme more praise!
Wakaba: Hey, get off your high horse~ Didn’t we promise to study at my place today? C’mon, let’s go!
Chisa: All right~! I’m sorta totally pumped to get’er done now!!
[They walk off.]
Aya: Fufufu...!
Hikaru: Aya?
Aya: Those two... sort of resembled us, right?
Hikaru: Heh...! I thought so, too.
Aya: ...*takes a deep breath*... ...Hikaru.
I’m sorry for what I said... that time.
Hikaru: Aya...!
Aya: You were only trying to encourage me. Honestly, I really could tell.
Still, I was so stressed because all sorts of things weren’t going well, so I said stuff that was basically lashing out at you.
Hikaru: No... I’m sorry, too!
Aya: What...?
Hikaru: My future course at the vocational school was settled. I can’t deny that I felt a sense of relief, like, “It’s all over~!”
That’s why, um. I might’ve been insensitive in all sorts of ways. So, I’m sorry!
Aya: Then I guess we’re both even.
Hikaru: Yep! We sure are!
Aya: Our relationship might meet bumps in the road, and our friendship might get strained.
Hikaru: But whenever that happens, all we need to do is make up, like we just did now!
Aya: You’re right...! ...Hehe. You’re a kind person, Hikaru.
Hikaru: So are you, Aya! Heh! Hehehe!
Ahahaha!
Aya: Hehehe!
[The two of them laugh together.]
Hikaru: Let’s do our best! We’re best friends, after all!
Aya: Yeah! Ah... also, Hikaru?
Hikaru: What’s up?
Aya: I want to go eat crepes with you!
Hikaru: Huh? But...
Aya: Well, yeah, of course I have to go study. Still, breaks are just as important, don’t you think?
Hikaru: ...! Yeah! I do, I totally do! That’s definitely gotta be it!
Aya: Plus, I wanna treasure the time I have with you! Ahehe!
[Aya runs off.]
Hikaru: Ah—Hey, wait! That should be my line~!!
[Hikaru runs after her.]
Chisa, Wakaba: Ooh~!! *clapping*
Chisa: Thank goodness! Oh, I’m so relieved. They managed to make up.
Wakaba: In conclusion, it’s very important to tell each other your feelings.
And come on, Chisa~? Don’t throw in an ad-lib that we didn’t rehearse beforehand.
Chisa: Ahahaha~ It’s just... when I remembered the past, my thoughts just took the wheel and surged right up!
Yet Waka-chan was awesome as always! You dealt with it so skillfully!
Now that’s my bestie for you! You always come in clutch, partner!
Wakaba: Sheesh, I can’t deal with you... Letting yourself get carried away as usual...
Chisa: Wheeew~! Now that I’ve finished a job well done, I’m hungry!
Wanna go for some crepes too?
Since we’re finally out here disguised as high school girls, I’m in the mood to get back in the student-tastic vibe~!
Wakaba: No~ way~! We have to get back immediately and write up a detailed report!
Chisa: Huuuh~! Come on, can’t we do it? Just for a little bit? I wanna eat some crepes~!
With bananas... and strawberries... and loads and loads of whipped creeeam~!
[Wakaba’s stomach growls.]
Chisa: Ah! Waka-chan’s stomach answered instead of her mouth~
Wakaba: Grk— Ngh...! Hh...! It’s because you said all that weird stuff, Chisa!!
Argh, fine! Once we finish eating, we’re heading straight back, all right!?
Chisa: Yippee! We’re gonna eat crepes to celebrate how we worked hard together!
Wakaba: Hehehe! Yeah, true! Okay, let’s go~!
Chisa: Whoo-hoo~!!
Fufufu!
Wakaba: Ahaha!
[They laugh together.]
