2. Drama – “Something I Can Say Because We’re Here Now"

[You, Yoru, and Mattsun are walking around checking out appliances.]

Yoru: Wow! This one food processor’s 700 yen~!

It’s not as expensive as I thought it’d be. Should I buy it?

-

You: Ah. This is the massage gun that the makeup artist had the other day.

If you use the massage gun on the side of your head right before putting makeup on, it makes for a good facelift.

Maybe I should get one to use at home.

-

Yoru: It’s a carbonated water maker! There are all sorts of varieties, huh?

You, didn’t you say you were curious about it before?

You: Well, yeah, ‘cuz it was trendy. But I ended up periodically buying cases of soda, one at a time, from online shopping sites. I’m not all that hard up.

Mattsun: Excuse me~...?

-

Yoru: I’ve seen this on TV before! It’s a high-class toaster!

Mattsun: Hey.

Yoru: The way it bakes the bread is just so exquisite—

Mattsun: Pinging.

Yoru: Apparently, it’ll elevate the sliced bread you eat to a whole new level—No, two! Doesn’t that sound intriguing?

You: Hey! Instead of that, we should check this out. There’s an aero bike!

Mattsun: Hello there?

You: I’ve been considering getting one for a long time now~

Mattsun: Excuse moi!

You: There’ve been more stylish-looking ones, and just one of ‘em here is—

Mattsun: HELLO THERE!! BOYS!!

You, Yoru: Huh?

Mattsun: TODAY! IS NOT HAPPY GIGGLY SHOPPING DAY!!

IT’S A FURNITURE RUN FOR YOUR CHILDHOOD FRIEND WHO’LL BE STARTING A NEW LIFESTYLE IN TOKYO!!

Yoru: Ah. You’re right.

You: Dang, I totally forgot!

Mattsun: Remember me...!

You: Sure thing. So whaddya wanna buy?

Are you gonna set up your new place with the layout of your furniture in mind?

Mattsun: Size is gonna be important for my fridge and washing machine, so I already bought it when I got my room.

So today, I’m thinking that I wanna buy everything aside from that, like a vacuum or microwave. Plus, microwaves have a lot of functions aside from warming stuff up, and I don’t really get them, so I’d also like some advice from Yoru. Since, y’know, I assume he’d be more knowledgeable about it.

Yoru: Got it. I don’t really know the brand-new functions all too well myself, but I’ll teach you whatever I can.

You: What about a TV?

Mattsun: Aah... I get the feeling I’ll make do with my phone for a while.

You: Hooh!! How modern!

Yoru: As someone who makes his appearances on TV, it also makes me feel lonely inside...

Mattsun: Aah, it’s not like that. I plan on buying one in the future, but most of my things are still in their cardboard boxes. I’m considering getting it once I unpack it all and check what size I should buy.

Yoru: I got it.

Mattsun: And for my vacuum cleaner, I think I’d like to have one of those robot vacuums! Aren’t there are bunch of different types recently? Which one of those—

You, Yoru: Don’t even consider it.

Mattsun: Whaaat!?

Doesn’t it go off on its own and clean for you? It’s perfect for someone like me, who gets lazy against my better judgment!

I thought I’d debut with a robot vacuum alongside my debut in Tokyo!

Yoru: If the layout of your room is the exact same as when we were kids...

Mattsun: Uh, yeah. It’s all cardboard right now, but I doubt it’ll be much different in the end.

You: So what you’re saying is that it’ll turn out a cluttered mess that’s all over the place.

Mattsun: Wh—Cluttered!? I’ll have you know, each and every part of that “mess” is a crystal of my precious memories! They are treasures, goshdarnit!

Yoru: In that case, I definitely cannot recommend that vacuum for you.

Mattsun: Huh? Wait, why?

You: Don’t you know? Those machines are the culmination of modern civilization, which can only be utilized by people who regularly keep things tidy and in order.

If someone like you uses it...

Mattsun: If I use it...!?

*gulps*

You: You’ll turn into a servant hell-bent on shoving aside furniture to make a path for your almighty robot lord.

Mattsun: *gasps* Ahh—I can... see that happening.

Yoru: Mattsun, you’re probably not the type to diligently keep things in order with great detail. It’s only when things have gotten really dirty that you go, “Maybe now’s the time for me to clean up~”

If you’re that type of person, it’d be easier for you to get a vacuum that can suck up a lot at one time, which doesn’t require regular maintenance.

You: For sure. I think so too.

Mattsun: My childhood friends understand my lifestyle way too well...!

-

Mattsun: Home sweet home~!

You, Yoru: Thanks for letting us in~

Mattsun: Yoop! There we go...

Yoru: Mattsun, we’ll be leaving the furniture in this corner, all right?

Mattsun: Be my guest! Thanks~ Whew.

You, PASS!

You: WHOA—

Mattsun: Yoru, too!

Yoru: Whoa!!

You: Dude, that was dangerous! Don’t toss us stuff outta nowhere.

Mattsun: Nahaha! Sorry, sorry. It’s because you two are my first guests.

Cushions, freshly excavated from their cardboard boxes!

Well, have a seat, why don’t you?

Guys~ Y’all okay with tea? There’s, like, nothing inside my fridge.

You, Yoru: Sure!

Mattsun: Whew... Here you are! I can’t regale you guys with any decent homemade cooking the way Yoru does, but I bought ingredients on the way back. And also this from our hometown, which I thought would bring some nostalgia to the table.

Yoru: Ah, persimmon leaf sushi!

You: Whoa, now that takes me back! Old Man Nagatsuki would always eat mine~

Mattsun: Oh, man. This stirred up both some nostalgia and fear of your natural enemy, huh?

You: There’s never been a damn day I’ve forgotten that geezer in the first place.

Yoru: I doubt he’s forgotten you, either. He talks about you every time I call him.

You: Dammit.

Yoru: Don’t say that.

You: Okay, fine.

~I’m praying for the sound health of that shitty grandpa~!

Mattsun: *chuckling* I think he’d live to a hundred years old even without your prayers.

Yoru: As his grandson, I’d like him to stay happy and healthy forever, and not just a hundred.

Mattsun: True that.

Oh, yeah. Before we take a trip down memory lane, let’s cheers first.

Yoru: Ah, that’s right.

Mattsun: Err, ahem! Thank you for assisting me in my shopping today! Cheers~!

You, Yoru: Cheers!

[They gulp down their drinks and sigh in satisfaction.]

You: Hey, wait. This guy acknowledged we were just his shopping assistants.

Yoru: I-it’s fine, it’s fine...

Mattsun: Teehee! ♡

You: Gah, I’m hungry. I’m digging in! Hmm. Mm.

Whoa, this is good!

Mattsun: We really can’t go wrong with good ingredients. Aah, Yoru. Get that for me?

Yoru: Here you are.

...Just as you said, you still haven’t finished unpacking most of it.

You: I know, right? Maybe you should’ve gotten us to help with this instead of going out to buy stuff.

Mattsun: ‘S fine, I’ll do it in due time. Gradually, little by little...

If there’s still cardboard boxes lying around the next time you guys come over to hang out, could you help me with that then?

You: In your case, I feel like that’s totally possible, so I’m actually scared of that happening.

Yoru: Ahaha...

Ah! I found a graduation album.

Mattsun: Ahahaha...! And... for some reason, something I meant to put in the home decor box... is right over here.

You: Dude, you’re shoving stuff into boxes too haphazardly.

Mattsun: Ahaha! Last night, I was skimming through it before I went to meet you guys.

Yoru: Wow... This feels so nostalgic!

You: Yoru, over here, bring it here.

Yoru: Ah! Yeah, sure thing.

You: Ahaha! Now that’s a blast from the past.

Mattsun: Yoru’s got his eyes half-open for this one~

Yoru: Ahaha—H-how embarrassing...

Wow. The campus, the classrooms, the teachers, all our classmates... This really does feel like a trip down memory lane.

You: Ugh, whew. Who expected me to be with you guys for this long?

Yoru: Now, the three of us are living in Tokyo. I doubt we would’ve expected that back then, either.

[They silently flip the pages of the album before Mattsun speaks up.]

Mattsun: Hey, so this is... something I can only talk about since we’re here now.

You: Huh?

Yoru: Mattsun?

Mattsun: Back in junior high, there was that time you guys surrounded yourselves with different friends... and didn’t really talk with each other much, right?

You: Oh—uh... Yeah...

Yoru: Yeah, that... did happen.

Mattsun: In the end, I stayed indecisive and didn’t choose a side. I was right smack-dab in the middle of you two.

You: ...Yeah.

Yoru: Yeah...

Mattsun: Back then, I thought... Even if you guys completely split off and never interacted with each other again, I’d most definitely never leave either of you. I’d keep hanging out with both of you, since I was right in the middle.

...Like, if I stayed connected with you two, then who knows? Someday... Maybe someday, when you guys became adults and remembered each other, I could link you two back up! *chuckles*

...I kept holding on hope that’d happen. *laughs* I guess that just goes to show how much I loved seeing you guys with me!

[Laughing voices from their teenage years fade away...]

You: Mattsun...

Mattsun: Juuust kidding!

Yoru: Wh...

Mattsun: As a young boy, Matsunaga Taichi had worked up an admirable determination to prepare himself for that to happen! But when it all came to a head?

The two of you just made up so readily! And then the two of you made your debuts as idols? As a pair!?

Yoru: No, but—It really didn’t happen as readily as you make it out to be... right?

You: Aahah... Yeah, pretty much.

Mattsun: SEE? It’s happening again! You’re doing it again! You’re having one of your unspoken interactions where only you two understand what you’re talking about!

You: Dude, what is up with you? Man, you’re acting like a real pain.

Mattsun: But don’t you see!? I thought you two had made up, but now I’m just the accompaniment! Being left behind!

You, Yoru: That’s not it.

Yoru: ......I’m sure that you were the thread that connected You and me back then.

You: ...I’m being perfectly serious right here. If you weren’t with us, I bet I wouldn’t have had an opportunity to talk with Yoru again. And if we didn’t have that, I just know we wouldn’t be spending time together like this now

Basically, what we’re trying to say here is...

You, Yoru: We’re sorry.

Mattsun: Oh...!

Yoru: We must’ve... must’ve made you worry for the longest time, huh? Sorry.

We never had an opportunity to discuss it in depth, so we’d never apologized.

You: And also, it wasn’t intentional, but we’d never properly matured. That’s why... if you felt some distance among us because of it, then the fault lies completely with us.

Yoru: Yeah. Mattsun, you weren’t just the thread that connected You and I at the time.

Ever since we left for Tokyo, you connected us to our hometown, too.

You: Whenever you talked about home, it got rid of any homesickness. It’s only because our roots never changed, that we were able to work this hard.

It’s happened all the time.

Yoru: That’s why I want to say...

...Thank you, Mattsun.

You: Thanks, Mattsun.

Mattsun: You... Yoru...!

*sniffs* ER-HEM! Fine! I forgive you!!

The two of you were my shopping assistants today, after all!

Heh, let’s get back on track and drink! We’re drinking, guys! Though it’s only tea.

Yoru: True.

You: Well, it’s dragged on this far, come what may. I bet this hopelessly inseparable relationship’s gonna keep on going from now on.

Yoru: I hope it does.

No... It’ll definitely continue!

Mattsun: I know, right~?

I’ve been stuck to you guys since you lived in Nara. I, the one widely acclaimed as a high-awareness NPC, have now appeared in Tokyo during a critical moment in your careers.

I’ll get even closer to your lifestyles, snug as a bug! And down the line, I’ll become Procella’s phantom seventh member—

You, Yoru: That’s not it.

Mattsun: Yeah, I figured as much~

You: Pfft...!

Yoru: Ufufu...!

Mattsun: Hahaha...!

[The three of them laugh together.]

You: *chuckling* Well, then. May this inseparable bond...

Mattsun: Keep on going forever...

Yoru: And continue on and on!

You, Yoru, Mattsun: Cheers!
