“Happy birthday!”

“Congrats~!”

 

“Whoa!”

 

I unwillingly yelped. When I opened the door, I was met with the twins... Issei-kun and Ichiru-kun, grinning ear-to-ear.

Morning.

 

I get out of bed at 6 o’clock every morning.

I quickly finish my breakfast and morning preparations, and I leave my room (in the dorms) at around 6:40.

From the dorms, the company office is a roughly 10-minute walk, and I reach my workplace at around 7 o’clock.

 

That being said, it’s still much too early for opening time (9:30), so I don’t enter the building.

I choose a café among the various establishments in the vicinity, and I often do some light work while sipping coffee or black tea.

I have many different types of morning jobs I do, with the suitable chatter and noise acting as my background music.

 

There are times I do simple work such as checking the mail and drafting reports, while there are also times I read books, listen to music, and leisurely relax.

I’m quite the morning person, so it feels like I can quickly finish anything up during this time of day. It feels good.

 

And once I’ve gotten the gears of my brain to turn a good deal, it’s finally time for me to get to work.

I leave the shop so that I’ll be seated at my desk at roughly 9 o’clock, and that’s where my day begins.

That was my, Yuduki Hiro’s, unchanging routine as long as I didn’t have any plans before entering work.

 

Though today, something was slightly different. My scheduling- and management-type apps flashed pop-ups going,

“Happy birthday.”

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”

One after the other.

 

“Aah. That’s right.”

 

Today was my birthday.

“......Hmm. Pretty lame reaction, if you ask me.”

 

“Aah! I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry! 💦

I know I’m lacking, but do believe me when I say I’m incredibly happy, and I’m overwhelmed with emotion right now!”

“Stop that, Ichiru. Overreactions don’t happen commonly in everyday life, you know. (He laughs wryly)”

“Sheesh, I know. It’s just that every single one of Eichi’s reactions is so crazy, I get the feeling normal reactions don’t have that oomph to them. Honestly, I think it’s screwed up how I see the world.”

“Ahaha. Eichi-kun’s a lively, fun person full of emotions. It’s as if he were a character from an American home drama, brought to life.”

“Yes, exactly.”

 

My benefactor’s face surfaces in my mind. He’s the person who connected me with these two... as well as with QUELL.

Ever since we met, he’d always been a charming person full of expressions that changed one after the other.

Even now, he himself and others recognize him as the one who livens up QUELL’s atmosphere.

Thanks to the connection he made for me, I met these four charming people and continue to work with them.

 

An unchanging routine every morning.

Similar business suits, neckties, and button-ups.

Sending emails, writing up reports and proposals.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

 

I’m sure someone as average and ordinary as me could be found anywhere. Knowing that my work could serve as the foundation for these dazzling four makes me just so proud.

And it wasn’t just about work, either.

I was the only one who saw the notification saying “Happy Birthday.”

The four of them actually remembered it – and on top of that, are celebrating for me.

Is there anything more blissful than this?

 

“That same Eichi and Shu will also be coming later. We’ll be having a birthday party for you.”

“Whoa! Thank you so much!”

 

After thanking them, something crosses my mind.

Izumi-san... No, Shu-kun requested that he not have any plans for later today because he wanted to stay inside for something he absolutely had to work on in the afternoon...

 

“Er... Shu-kun, too?”

“Yes, he’ll be coming.”

“You were thinking about how his plans said he’d be workin’ on something in the afternoon, huh?”

“Yes. He requested that I not put in additional plans, so I did that for him.”

 

“Apparently, he’s gonna work full-speed on a birthday song for you. Don’tcha think he’ll be singing it in that nice voice of his?”

 

“...... ......WHAAAAT!?!?!?”

 

I let out the biggest yelp I had in 2024.

Shu-kun... writing a song... for me.

And will he be singing it for me?

Will he be playing the piano for me?

If he did both......

 

My memory of the occasion would be wiped.

Without a doubt.

 

“Whaaat... What should I do...... That’s... isn’t that an incredibly... amazing thing......?”

 

“......Ichiru. Shouldn’t you have kept that a secret to ensure a bigger reaction from him?”

“...AW, SHOOT!!!!”

 

Today is my birthday.

 

Filled with love, filled with music, and with gratitude...
